House of Cards Season 1

house-of-cards-final-posterAs a recent Netflixer I started by watching the first Season of a show I heard a lot about already. House of Cards (US) is an adaptation of the original BBC miniseries by the same name that aired in 1990 and the novel by Michael Dobbs.

It is an American political drama series created especially for the Netflix network and premiered on February 1 2013. The entire first season was placed on line at the same time and contains 13 episodes.

It is the story of Frank Underwood (played by Kevin Spacey) a Democrat in office in Washington. After he is passed over for an important position, he decides to plan a revenge that will get him in a place of power in the end. He is assisted by his wife Claire Underwood (played by Robin Wright). She is the head of a organization called CWI (Clear Water Initiative).

The series is primarily about ruthless pragmatism, manipulation, power, and doing bad things for the greater good. To get where he wants to go Frank doesn’t hold back and is not afraid to hurt or even kill people to get what he wants. He uses everyone and everything, sometimes even without them knowing it. Everyone is a pawn in Franks game to get him ahead in life.

Several networks competed for the show, but in the end Netflix won because they committed to 2 seasons right away. The second season was released in 2014, and a third season has been announced for 2015.

What I really love about this show is its portrayal of the inner workings of the US Government. The story is great, the actors are fantastic and I found that once I started watching I couldn’t stop anymore. I advice everyone to watch this show because I absolutely love it !!

For its first season, House of Cards received nine Primetime Emmy Award nominations, becoming the first original online-only web television series to receive major Emmy nominations. Among its nine nominations were Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for Kevin Spacey, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Robin Wright, and Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series for David Fincher. The show also earned four Golden Globe Award nominations and Wright won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Television Series Drama to be the first major acting award for an online-only web television series. For its second season, the series received 13 Primetime Emmy Award nominations.
